Background
An evening of music and literature in The Town Hall Theatre featuring some of the finest writers and musicians in the country. Black Gate Invitational allows for the magic of improvisation, giving artists an option to let their work be interpreted live with other voices and to see new sparks emerge from their work.
Process
Funded through the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Local Live Performance Programming Scheme Phase 4, Galway City Council commissioned us to curate and produce a large-scale cultural event in October 2022. Drawing on our extensive artist and crew networks we curated and produced an improvisational evening of music and literature in the 400-seater auditorium of Galway’s Town Hall Theatre.
Results
Songwriters Rioghnach Connolly, Peter Broderick, Suzanne Savage, Róisín Elsafty, Inni-K, Little John Nee, Anna Mullarkey, and Rodney Owl were joined by writers Claire-Louise Bennett, Eva Bourke, Alan MacMonagle, Taim Haimet, Louis de Paor, and Elizabeth Reapy for an improvisational evening of music and literature against the backdrop of a nine-piece big band featuring Matthew Berrill, Naomi Berrill, Matthew Jacobson, Nick Roth, Olesya Zdorovetska, Aengus Hackett, Greg Felton, Floriane Blancke and Derek White.
